Fall Leaves Abstract Collage Art Lesson for Kids

Fall is a wonderful time of year where the leaves are turning beautiful colors- let's create an abstracted collage with leaf prints!

History Fernand Léger (February 4, 1881 – August 17, 1955) was a French artist famous for his paintings and sculpture. He is regarded as a forerunner of pop art. Fernand Léger was born in rural Normandy on February 4, 1881 and raised by his family to take up a valuable trade, like his father who was a cattle dealer. While Léger was not encouraged to become an artist, when he showed talent for drawing, he was sent to apprentice with an architect in the French city of Caen. Léger worked in a variety of media including paint, ceramic, film, theater and dance sets, glass, print, and book arts. While his style varied, his work was consistently graphic, favoring primary colors, pattern, and bold form.

Project Students will combine paper collage with brightly colored leaf prints inspired by the art of Ferdinand Léger. They will collage organic paper shapes onto a background, then use bright florescent paint to print leaves onto the collaged shapes.

Recommended Materials:

9x12 orange construction paper
9x12 assorted bright construction paper
Assorted leaves
Paint and large paint brushes (Young Artist Learn to Paint Set)
Scissors
Glue sticks
Paper plates

Prep: Pre cut organic shapes in a variety of sizes.

Arrange organic shapes on 9x12 orange construction paper.

Use large paintbrush to paint the back of leaves (the vein side). Cover leaf evenly.

Print leaves 2 or 3 times on top of collaged shapes

Frame artwork in 11x14 white frame. If time allows, let students try printing more leaves on newsprint.
