May is the month when we celebrate Mother’s Day. In keeping with the idea of the protective and caring mama bear, I am drawing a polar bear mom and her three cubs in honor of my own three children. Feel free to draw more/fewer cubs if you like.

Make a light pencil sketch of the bear family and hand-letter ‘May’ with a Grip 2001 Graphite Pencil – HB as shown.

Make fur marks on the mama bear with Goldfaber Aqua Dual Marker Sand 281 and Titanium Violet Light 277. Vary the length and direction of strokes to create visual dimension.

Blend the fur marks slightly with the Deluxe Water Brush on the mama bear. Start adding fur on the cubs using Goldfaber Aqua Dual Marker Warm Grey III 272.

Give the mama bear more definition with Goldfaber Aqua Dual Marker Warm Grey III 272 and add facial details with Goldfaber Aqua Dual Marker Black 199.

Add details to the bear family with Goldfaber Aqua Dual Marker Warm Grey III 272, Apricot 116, Light Yellow Ochre 183 and Black 199.

Create an at-a-glance mini calendar for the month right below the ‘May’ using a ruler and Pitt Artist Pen Extra Superfine Black.

I like to hand-letter my intentions on my month opener that are symbolized by the animal I chose. Here I used the Goldfaber Aqua Dual Marker Warm Grey III 272 to do so.

I also include my trackers on the opening page. Since I only use two trackers, they fit comfortably on my opening page. If you use several trackers, you may need to dedicate more than just space on the opener to accommodate all of them.

I hand-letter the tracker title and days with Pitt Artist Pen Extra Superfine Black. Because the Pitt Artist Pen has India ink which is permanent when dry, I can confidently color over the ink with my Goldfaber Aqua Dual Markers without fear of smudging when I fill my trackers.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and give the Goldfaber Aqua Dual Markers a try alongside your Pitt Artist Pens!
