Autumn Hand Lettering with Watercolor Flower Wreath

Something I absolutely love to create around the holidays is wreaths. Especially floral wreaths. Flower Drawing Tutorial

Start by creating a very light circle on your watercolor paper using a light pencil, I used an HB because it’s one the lightest leads with pencils. Then using your Cream watercolor pencil, add three dots (around the size of your fingertip) around the circle as evenly as possible. (It doesn’t need to be perfect. Just eyeball it.) Then grab your Light Ultramarine watercolor pencil and color around those dots and do the same with your Mauve watercolor pencil. And again, no perfection needed. You’re just applying the color.

Next grab your Dark Naples Ochre, Rose Carmine, and Magenta watercolor pencils and do the same thing but in between the others you just made. These are going to be the flowers for the wreath.

Now grab your Green Yellowish and Cobalt Turquoise and just go over the rest of the pencil lines around the circle.

To blend the flower shapes you just created, grab your water brush and wet everything one at a time. For each flower, start in the middle and work your way out so that the colors just barely start to blend together.

Quick tip: Clean your water brush tip if you find that your colors are blending too much together. As much as needed. And use as little water as possible and add more if needed.

Then use your water brush to wet the green lines also just enough to soften the lines.

Now for the leaves, grab your Green Yellowish and Cobalt Turquoise watercolor pencils and create leaf shapes all around. Outline with the Cobalt Turquoise and fill them in with the Green Yellowish.

And use your water brush to blend them using the same technique as the flowers. Start inside and then blend the outline.

We’re going to bring it all together now.

Grab your Purple Violet Pitt Artist Pen and starting in the middle of your purple flowers, start adding the flower petals. Use the printable for step by step instructions.

Then grab your Magenta Pitt Artist Pen and do the same for the red flowers. You can also use the printable for step by step instructions for these.

Don’t be afraid to go outside the colors a little. It’s meant to be very loose and full of character.

And your Chromium Green Opaque Pitt Artist Pen for the lines around the circle and lines inside the leaves.

Lastly, and optional, you can now add a little quote or word inside your wreath. I brush lettered the word “Autumn” using my Purple Violet Pitt Artist Pen. I’ve added a sample on the printable for this too if you’d like to add it.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and have fun creating your wreath!
